BOOTS, BRACES, SCOOTER, RACE, MUSIC & FOOTBALL- THE DR MARTENS WAY

When you start thinking about a feature, you never know what will inspire you or where the research will lead you.

Today, I have been inspired by Mike Skinner and Miley Cyrus???? Who would have thought I could link them in the same sentence?

As we all know, sex sells. So I do not apologise for using the Miley Cyrus photo of her in nothing else but her Oxblood DM boots to draw your attention to this post. That’s her only link to this post….she knows a great pair of shoes can get you noticed.

This feature is about Dr Martens, their legacy and their new collaboration with Edwin Jeans.

It started with reading the Hambledon.com Face book page. This led to their excellent Q&A with Pierre Boiselle, Sales & Marketing Manager at Edwin Europe. Here is the link if you want to follow my research journey:

Q&A with Pierre Boiselle, Sales & Marketing Manager at Edwin Europe | News.

The interview, led me to research Edwin and it got me thinking which shoes would suit the ED-80 (a popular style of Edwin jeans’ & mentioned by Pierre Boiselles as his must haves in the interview)?

I didn’t have to engage the grey cells for long, because Edwin have already done the hard work.

Edwin collaborated with Dr Martens in the Spirit of 69 capsule collection. The capsule, is a modern interpretation of a look started back in 1969 by the first generation skinheads. The Spirit of 69 collection took its influence from the skinhead subculture, by using brands associated to the Boots & Braces skinhead staples – Alpha Industries, Brutus, Edwin and Trojan Records.

In honour of the collaboration, Edwin have created a modern interpretation of the bleached jean style that was much-loved by first generation skinheads. Available in the slim fit ED-80 (which is Pierre Boiselle’s favourite style) for men and Herman Pant for women. Both pairs of jeans include laser etched, Vietnamese camouflage and custom leather branding made in the famous Cobbs Lane factory in Wollaston, UK. Dr Martens have used the campaign to showcase the Smiths Oxblood shoes RRP£100.

If like me, you know very little about the Skinhead culture or you just want to watch a quality short film about the culture, follow this link:

SPIRIT OF 69 – A FILM BY MIKE SKINNER // DR. MARTENS

The Spirit of 69 video features with musician Mike Skinner (known to many from his work with the Streets). Mike Skinner’s use of rap and lyrical prowess such as “Tea breaks for Teacakes” and “boots: braces: scooter: race: music and football” makes this film an entertaining journey into the legacy of skinheads whilst showcasing the Dr Marten brand.

It has made me very nostalgic and the Smiths Oxblood shoes might appear on my wish list very soon. What about you?

If you could be a skinhead for the day, would you wear brogues, loafers or DM’s?
